Welcome to the 20th Nippon Connection ONLINE Film Festival!

The Nippon Connection Film Festival has been bringing Japanese film culture to Frankfurt am Main for 20 years. And yet everything feels new under the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the title Nippon Connection ONLINE, the festival will take place in a virtual form for the first time from June 9 to 14, 2020. The program will be available internationally via our website!

With NIPPON ON DEMAND, we are pleased to present more than 70 current short and feature films that explore recent developments in Japanese cinema. This year’s focus FEMALE FUTURES?, supported by Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain, takes a close look at new images of women in Japan. On the occasion of our anniversary edition, we have also compiled highlights from 20 festival years in a BEST OF NIPPON CONNECTION program. Our audience will choose the winner of the first NIPPON ONLINE AWARD for the most interesting new film in the NIPPON VISIONS and NIPPON DOCS sections. The audience award is sponsored by our partner Japan Visualmedia Translation Academy.

Instead of a cultural program on site, we are live streaming lectures, discussions, concerts, performances, workshops, and even a karaoke party to your home under the title NIPPON CONNECTED. NIPPON KIDS offers a colorful program for our young audience. And our virtual NIPPON MARKET presents a variety of offers around Japan. Without Japanese guests, Nippon Connection is still not imaginable in 2020! Numerous filmmakers and artists will participate in the online events of the film and supporting program via streams and video messages.

Nippon Connection could not have existed for 20 years without the voluntary commitment of our team and our long-standing supporters and partners. We are especially glad about the patronage of Angela Dorn (Hessian Minister for Science and Art), Peter Feldmann (Lord Mayor of the City of Frankfurt), and the Consulate General of Japan in Frankfurt am Main.

We are looking forward to returning to our usual venues from June 1 to 6, 2021, but this year,  stay safe at home and join us on a virtual journey to Japan!
