When Nippon Connection started as a festival 20 years ago, Japanese cinema was experiencing another peak in international interest. But instead of further cross-border expansion, Japanese films increasingly turned to local audiences. The production boom persists, but in today‘s globalized, fragmented market, it is becoming increasingly difficult to reach viewers. Moreover, the rising presence of streaming services is putting the entire industry to the test. The panelists will discuss these and other developments from the past twenty years and try to take a look into the future.
