Directors such as Naomi KAWASE, Miwa NISHIKAWA or Akiko OKU are regularly represented at international festivals. But how visible are they in Japan in the cinema, at festivals, and with the public in general? Why do women in Japan's film industry concentrate mainly on documentary films? Together with three women filmmakers of this year's program focus, we will investigate the politics behind the images. We ask ourselves how women shape contemporary Japanese cinema – and the cinema of the future!
Participants: Maggie Lee (moderator), Yukiko MISHIMA (director SHAPE OF RED), Naomi MIZOGUCHI (director AINU – INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF JAPAN), Haruka KOMORI (director LISTENING TO THE AIR)
