Nagisa OSHIMA 大島渚

Diary Of A Shinjuku Thief

Nippon Retro   ²

While stealing some books, a student meets a girl; they befriend each other, but have sexual problems. That pretty much wraps up the plot of DIARY OF A SHINJUKU THIEF. However, this plot is also the vantage point for a documentary glance on life in Shinjuku, Tokyo’s amusement district. The film was shot without a fixed script, between street theater and real-life political rallies. Now and then, the crew can be seen discussing the themes of the film, which is filled with literary and cinematic references.
