Which movies can I watch at Nippon On Demand?

You can enjoy the entire film program of the 20th Nippon Connection ONLINE film festival via Video on Demand from the comfort of your own home. To see the films, please click HERE.

What do I need to use Nippon On Demand?

You only need

  • a playback device (i.e.: smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer, smart TV or in the best case, of course, a well-equipped home cinema system)

  • Internet access

  • a Vimeo account

How much are the films?

Each film costs 5 euros. After you have paid, you can stream the film for 24 hours and pause as often as you like. Many films also include bonus features such as video messages from the filmmakers, interviews, and trailers.

Are there discounts?

Each film / short film program costs 5 euros per rental. However, you can also purchase a 10-ticket package for 40 euros (see “How does the 10-ticket package work?”).

How does the 10-ticket package work?

  1. You can buy a 10-ticket package in our shop: www.nipponconnectionshop.de
    The 10-ticket package can only be paid with Paypal. The minimum age for buying a 10-ticket package is 18 years.

  2. When ordering, you must already specify all 10 films / short film programs you would like to see.

  3. Our ticketing team will then send you an e-mail with the respective codes to unlock the films no later than 1-2 days after receipt of your order.

  4. As soon as the festival starts (June 9, 2020 00:00), you can select the desired film and enter the respective code when clicking on “Rent”. You will then not have to pay anything more for the film. Now you can watch the film for 24 hours as often as you like.

Please note: The 10-ticket package is only available within Germany.

Are there free movies too?

Yes, you can watch A Stranger in Shanghai for free. You can find more information on our free live streams, filmmakers’ talks and discussion groups in the NIPPON CONNECTED section of our website.

How can I pay?

As soon as you rent a film from Nippon On Demand, you can pay via credit card or Paypal.

I don't have a credit card, can I still watch movies?

Yes. Paypal can also be linked to a regular bank account.

Can I purchase films in advance?

The renting of films is only possible from the first day of the festival, June 9, 2020. However, you can already purchase a 10-ticket package for 10 desired films / short film programs from the beginning of June (see “How does the 10-ticket package work?”).

Do I need a Vimeo account to stream the films?

Yes. Since the renting and streaming is handled through Vimeo on Demand, you will have to create a Vimeo account  first if you don’t have one yet. But this is free, fast and convenient! Simply register with your e-mail address, Facebook, Google or Apple account.

From when and for how long can I watch the films?

The films of Nippon Connection 2020 can only be rented during the festival week from June 9 to 14, 2020. After you rent a film, it will be available for viewing on your devices for 24 hours via your Vimeo account.

Do I have to watch the film immediately after purchase?

No. All bookings are available 24 hours after rental on your user account under “Purchases”. Within this period you can watch the films as often as you like, even interrupt them and continue watching them at a later time.

What happens if I buy a film shortly before the end of the festival? Can I still rent it for 24 hours?

Each film is available for 24 hours on Vimeo after purchase, so you can still stream it after the end of the festival.

Can I download the films?

No. Our online offer is limited to streaming and rental for 24 hours, not purchase

Is there a limited number of tickets?

No.

Are there films with age restrictions?

Children and teenagers are allowed to watch the programs intended for their age groups – you can find the classification on the video-on-demand page of the corresponding film. The minimum age for purchasing a 10-ticket package is 18 years. The cardholder is responsible for compliance with the age requirements for minors.

Is access to the films barrier-free?

All our films have German or English subtitles. The films in the NIPPON KIDS section are available in German dubbing. The respective language and subtitle version is also noted in the film description on our homepage.

I already have a Vimeo account. Can I use the Nippon On Demand service with it?

Yes, you do not need to create an additional account.

What happens if I forget my Vimeo password?

Since Vimeo accounts are managed by Vimeo itself, please contact Vimeo support or have a look at the Vimeo FAQ.

Does the Vimeo app work on my Smart TV / with Android / iOS?

The Vimeo app does not perform all functions on all devices. We recommend that you purchase the films via your browser. Afterwards, the rented title can be played on a SmartTV via the app under Library > Purchases.

Can I watch the movies in my country?

Some movies have a country restriction. You can check whether the film can be watched outside of Germany on the respective video-on-demand page of the film under “Availability”. The country release is also noted in the film description on our homepage.

Why does my film abort?

If you are using an unstable Internet connection, you may experience dropouts.

I have rented films, but playback does not start. What can I do?

  1. Refresh the window and check whether playback is possible afterwards.

  2. Check whether the payment has been made, or still needs to be authorized, or has failed.

  3. Check if your browser is up-to-date and download the latest version if necessary. Then close the page and open it again.

  4. If necessary, contact Vimeo via the Vimeo HelpCenter. As Vimeo On Demand is our streaming service, their customer advisors are the appropriate contacts for technical problems.

What is Nippon Connected?

This year, the digital supporting program of the festival is called NIPPON CONNECTED. The section contains virtual workshops, online karaoke, concerts by Japanese artists, lectures, interviews, discussions and performances. To see the complete program, please click HERE.

Is the offer free of charge?

Concerts, lectures, panel discussions, interactive events and performances can be watched for free via livestream on Vimeo. You can find the ticket prices for the paid events HERE.

How can I view the free concerts, lectures, etc.?

Concerts, lectures, panel discussions, interactive events and performances can be watched free of charge via livestream on Vimeo.

For this you need:

  • a smartphone, tablet, laptop or stationary computer

  • Internet access

How can I take part in a paid event?

Workshops, cooking classes, Nippon Heimkino At Home and the Benshi performance are subject to a fee and take place via Zoom. The ticket prices for the paid events can be found HERE.

You will need the following for participation:

  • a laptop or stationary computer

  • if necessary a webcam and microphone

  • Internet access

How can I take part in online karaoke?

Our popular karaoke party will take place online this year. As with the workshops, you can join in via Zoom. To register, click HERE. If there are more than 50 registrations, we will draw lots for the participants and inform you in time by e-mail.

What is Zoom?

Zoom is an online conference tool with video function, which allows you to participate in interactive workshops (“webinars”).

How does a workshop with Zoom work??

  1. Select a workshop from the program and click on the ticket button.

  2. Now you can register for the workshop and pay the participation fee with Paypal. You will automatically receive the access link by e-mail, with which you can participate in the event.

  3. Just before the event starts, call up the link in your browser. If you do not have the Zoom app installed, Zoom will prompt you to download the Zoom client (for detailed instructions, see the Zoom help page).

  4. Now allow Zoom access to your microphone and webcam, and enter the virtual conference room. The workshop can begin!

Tip: To ensure the best audio and video quality, we recommend downloading the Zoom app and using it on a laptop or stationary PC rather than on a smartphone or tablet.

Do I have to download Zoom to my computer to participate in a workshop?

No. All you need to do is access the meeting link in your browser and allow Zoom access to your microphone and camera. However, downloading the client or the Zoom app can improve the video quality.

Does Zoom cost anything?

No, the use of Zoom is free of charge.
A participation fee may only be charged for the event.

I cannot hear anything and I am not heard. What can I do?

If you use Zoom via the browser, it must be given access authorisation for your microphone. You can change your audio settings in the browser by clicking on the small arrow to the right of the microphone symbol (“Mute/Unmute”) and then selecting “Audio settings”. Here you can select your computer speakers and your computer microphone.

If you are using Zoom via the app, be sure to select “Join with computer audio” when you enter the meeting. You can also change the source of the microphone and speakers from the audio settings. To do this, click the small arrow to the right of the microphone icon (“Mute/Unmute”).

I cannot see anything and I am not seen. What can I do?

If you use Zoom via the browser, it must have access authorization for your camera. You can change your camera settings in the browser by clicking on the small arrow to the left of the camera symbol and then selecting the camera on your computer.

If you use Zoom via the app, make sure to select “join with video” when entering the meeting. You can also change the image source in the Zoom meeting itself: Either by clicking the small arrow to the right of the camera icon or under “Settings” > “Video”.
